Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

5And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

This passage does not imply that God is like the friend who needs to be begged or badgered to get something from Him

Contrast, Not Comparison

  • Jesus was making a contrast, not comparison.
  • Friends don’t treat each other callously.
  • Jesus meant, if a friend would treat you better than this, how much more God
  • The friend obliged the request either because he’s a friend or he was badgered, but God is more than a friend and won’t treat us that bad. W didn’t ask for Him to sacrifice His son or prepare a fully loaded garden before placing man in it.
  • Some of us trust our spouses more than we trust God

Insulting God

  • The thought that God has to be badgered or begged is an insult to God
  • You can’t make God do anything! He’s already done everything!
  • Faith only makes what God already supplied by grace to manifest
  • Faith does not move God as He doesn’t need to move
